Wat ik doe is een helder, communicatief sterk en toegankelijk beeld neerzetten. Ik verhelder complexe informatie.
Mijn credo is: less is more.
Een medisch wetenschappelijke illustratie is een vertaling van de werkelijkheid. Deze werkelijkheid ontdoen van alles wat niet relevant is komt de communicatie van die informatie ten goede. De vertaling mag de werkelijkheid echter geen geweld aandoen.
Mijn achtergrond
De opleiding "Master Scientific Illustration" heb ik in Maastricht gevolgd. Anatomie en een grondig onderzoek liggen altijd ten grondslag aan een visualisatie (tekening, digitaal 3d-model, animatie, etc.) van mijn hand.
In de loop der jaren heb ik voor vele verschillende opdrachtgevers visuele vertalingen geïllustreerd in diverse technieken. Wat ik kan bieden aan medisch wetenschappelijke illustraties is als volgt samen te vatten:
- heldere grafische illustraties
- plastisch uitgewerkte visualisaties
- 3-dimensionale vertalingen (kunnen eventueel geanimeerd worden)
Het interactief aanbieden van deze visualisaties op bijvoorbeeld educatieve websites is een succesvolle toepassing.

Maartje Kunen zit sinds 2007 in het bestuur van de Europese vereniging van wetenschappelijke en medische illustratoren, AEIMS (Assocation Européenes des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques).

Setting down a clear, strong, open and accessible representation is what I do. I clarify complex information. My credo is: minder is meer.
A medical scientific illustration is a translation of reality. Stripping the reality, focussing on the message of it, serves the communication of that information. The translation must fit the reality at any time.
My background
I was educated at Master Scientific Illustration (Maastricht, Netherlands). Anatomy and a thorough examination is always the basis for a visualization (drawing, digital 3D model, animation, etc.).
Over the years I have provided many different clients with visual translations, illustrated in various techniques. What I can offer in the field of medical scientific illustrations can be summarized as follows:
